wakening the Senses: How Nature and My Cat Cassie Saved Me from the Void
A few years ago, I found myself completely lost. It was a strange, suspended time, where time itself seemed to have no meaning. With the arrival of Covid-19 and successive lockdowns, the outside world suddenly froze, and my inner world collapsed with it. Cooped up within four walls, I felt an immense void settling inside me. Everything was at a standstill, and I had the painful sensation of stagnating, of slowly fading away in the midst of this oppressive silence.
Then, one spring day, when the feeling of suffocation became too strong, I decided to take a step outside my door and walk toward the nearby forest. I didn't know it yet, but this simple step was about to change the course of my life.

The Spark: The Forest's Awakening
Entering beneath the canopy, the contrast with my gloomy daily life was striking. Where I saw only emptiness and stillness at home, the forest was overflowing with a vibrant, silent life. Everything was disarmingly beautiful.
I stopped in front of a majestic tree. Almost instinctively, I reached out and placed my palm against its bark. It was rough, textured, imbued with a subtle warmth. Closing my eyes to better feel this connection, a gentle breeze carried to me a sweet, sugary, and captivating fragrance: the scent of blooming lilacs.
At that precise moment, the constant chatter of my anxious mind went quiet. Birds sang overhead, weaving a complex and soothing melody. That day, nature gave me the most beautiful gift: the present moment.
Cassie: My Silent Guide to Mindfulness
It was from this sensory experience that I began my journey toward mindfulness. But I didn't walk this path alone. I was fortunate to have an extraordinary mentor by my side, one of infinite wisdom and great gentleness: my cat, Cassie.
Cats are, by nature, masters of mindfulness. Watching Cassie live day by day, I relearned how to inhabit my own body and space:
-
The Art of Observation: Watching Cassie stare at a sunbeam or listen to the slightest rustle of a leaf taught me to pay curious, non-judgmental attention to my surroundings.
-
Synchronous Breathing: During our quiet moments, placing my hand on her side and matching my breathing to her soothing purrs became my best anchor against anxiety.
-
The Pleasure of Simple Things: A lazy stretch, the warmth of the sun on the skin, the softness of a pet... Cassie showed me that happiness doesn't lie in accumulating, but in fully appreciating the moment.
The Benefits of Connecting with the Living World
Reconnecting with nature and practicing mindfulness daily transformed my mental and physical health. Here is what this journey brought me, and what it can bring to you too:
-
Reducing Mental Load: By focusing my attention on my senses (what I see, touch, smell), I cut short the endless thoughts about the past or the future.
-
Physical Anchoring: Touching the earth, petting my cat, feeling the wind on my face allowed me to get out of my head and inhabit my body in a kind way.
-
A Sense of Belonging: Walking in the forest makes you realize we are part of a much larger whole. We are never truly alone when we are connected to the living world.
A Few Tips to Begin Your Own Reconnection
If you too are going through a period of emptiness, doubt, or stress, I invite you to try these three simple actions inspired by my journey:
-
Take a "Sensory Walk": Go to a park or forest. Without your phone, focus successively on 3 things you can hear (birds singing, wind in the leaves), 3 things you can see (the color of a flower, the shape of the clouds), and 3 things you can touch (grass, a branch, bark).
-
Observe Animals: If you have a pet, spend 10 minutes a day just watching them live, without interacting directly, trying to perceive the world through their eyes.
-
Breathe with the Seasons: Take time to smell the outdoor air. Each season has its signature scent—lilac in spring, wet earth in autumn. Let these scents anchor you in the present.
Today, when I look back at that dark period when I was lost, I feel immense gratitude for this forest and for Cassie. They opened my eyes to an essential truth: even in the midst of chaos, the beauty of the world remains there, accessible to anyone who takes the time to stop and listen.
